The Sleep Hygiene Index is a valid questionnaire about how good your sleep hygiene sleep habits are.

Is There A Valid Sleep Hygiene Quiz Or Test?

Did you know that the Sleep Hygiene Index is a scientifically validated quiz to see how good your sleep hygiene sleep habits really are?

The internet has lots of sleep hygiene sleep tips and hacks. Some are complete rubbish.

The Sleep Hygiene Index is unique in that it was actually designed based on criteria used in the International Classification Of Sleep Disorders (ICSD) to diagnose insomnia related to having poor sleep hygiene (that isn’t a diagnostic criteria that exists in the latest version of the ICSD-3).

That means the items in the Sleep Hygiene Index questionnaire are more likely to be real sleep hygiene sleep habits that could affect sleep.

Can Poor Sleep Hygiene Contribute To Insomnia & Sleep Problems?

The nice thing about the Sleep Hygiene Index questionnaire is that it has a scientifically validated cutoff score that helps identify whether your sleep hygiene sleep habits may be contributing to you having poor sleep.

That’s super helpful if you’re experiencing insomnia, sleep apnoea (also spelt sleep apnea), restless legs syndrome, a circadian rhythm sleep disorder like delayed sleep phase disorder or any other sleep disorder for that matter.

Can Good Sleep Hygiene Cure Insomnia Or A Sleep Disorder?

Sadly sleep hygiene, sleep habits, etc won’t cure a sleep disorder like insomnia. We’ve written about the scientific evidence for sleep hygiene as an insomnia treatment here.

But poor sleep hygiene will make a sleep disorder worse.

That means you need to have good sleep hygiene to improve your sleep regardless of sleep disorder but sleep hygiene alone won’t cure insomnia and other sleep disorders - you’ll need specific treatment for the sleep disorder + good sleep hygiene (find out about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for insomnia, the recommended insomnia treatment)

Think about it like this: Sleep Hygiene for sleep is like hand hygiene for flu and other communicable diseases and viruses. Washing your hands will cut the risk of you getting the flu. But once you’ve got the flu, washing your hands is not going to cure it. Same with hygiene for sleep. Cuts the risk of developing a sleep disorder, but won’t cure the sleep disorder once you have it.

Where Can I Take The Sleep Hygiene Sleep Quiz?

You can take the Sleep Hygiene quiz below and you’ll instantly get an email telling you whether your sleep hygiene sleep habits are likely to be contributing to poor sleep.
